Rhythm Akimbo
May. 26th, 2004 04:14 pmI was browsing through orkut last night, which I really haven't done too much of yet. I was looking at the Cal Poly SLO community and saw a message from a guy wondering about Rhythm Akimbo, quoted here without permission.
So when I arrived at CP in the Fall of 1991, I remember seeing leftover chalk ads for a band called Rhythm Akimbo. A few years later I happened to buy one of their tapes from Big music. What a great band!
I still have the tape, though its worn all to heck. I'm wondering if anyone has any information on what the band members are up to and if its even remotely possible that one of their CDs is still out there.
Does anyone else even remember this band?
I felt obliged to respond as I remember them well and have their CD. They were an octet made up from members of the CP choirs and symphonic band and were pretty popular on the local band scene.
I knew three of them and of these probably knew Jen Elson, the trumpet player, the best at the time. A quick Google shows that she is (or was) in a bay area band called J. Edgar Nation, along with another former RA member. The only member I've seen recently is Tim Crooks, their sax player. Some of you may remember Tim from computer-type stuff.
Jen was my section leader in symphonic band. She was an amazing musician but could be a little bitchy at times, though she did mellow out eventually. I learned more about musicianship from her than any other single person I've known. I used to melt a little when I'd listen to her solo, which she did frequently. Admittedly I also thought she was cute (especially the haircut) and had a little crush on her.
I've been giving their 1991 CD Temple Beth Skyturn another listen. It's pretty good in an early 90s college band kind of way. Flipping through the liner notes, I notice that they used several people from band to round out various tracks. Also involved in the production was Dr. Barata from the music department.
